Good people make the world go ’round.
This morning I woke up to find that I was tagged in a pic on Facebook. In my groggy state, and without my glasses on, it wasn’t entirely clear why I was tagged in the photo, which looked like a few old-school sandwich bags on a lawn. After looking more closely, I was immediately touched.
You see, I have this friend Pam who does the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life every year in California. Pam is one of the sweetest, most thoughtful people you’ll ever meet. And she has a personality the size of the planet. When she walks into a room, it’s instantly brighter. She’s one of those people who, once she’s your friend, she’s always your friend, even if you don’t talk all the time or see each other regularly. And she’s a wonderful reminder that there truly are good-from-the-core people in the world.
For this year’s walk, Pam made a memory bag (I’m not sure if that’s really what it’s called but it sounds nice) for my brother Lanny. He didn’t die of cancer, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that Pam took time out of her day to selflessly think of someone else and to honor my brother. That, to me, is what it’s all about.
Pam: you are, hands down, the best! One of these years I’m going to do that walk with you and we can honor Lanny — and all those folks in our lives who have passed — together. xoxo
